General, Spanish Culture

Intro

Spain is a country which has engulfed so many things in it that exploring it is an impossible task. This European country is the world’s most popular tourist destination. There are many things which make it so popular among the tourists like the bullfights, Flamenco, amazing beaches and lovely sunshine. However, there is a lot more hidden behind all this and it is sure that this paradise has a lot more to offer. The culture of Spain is world renowned, as it has been under many rulers and dynasties; it’s a perfect blend of different cultures and traditions. One of the most popular phrase which was very commonly used by the Spanish people was “Spain is different!” Now, the irony of this is that that they never used to mention that compared to what Spain is different. Were they referring it to Europe or the whole world? Nobody knows, but one thing is sure, that whatever they meant, it is true that Spain is different.

Art

Spain has got one of the most extraordinary and the best artistic heritage of the world. The most important figures in the amazing golden age were El Greco, Francisco Goya, and Diego Velasquez. These Toledo-based artists were eighteenth century’s best Spanish painters and they have created one of the most beautiful portraits of history. However, the 20th century was marked by the most remarkable painters of world history like Pablo Picasso. The whole world is unaware about this fact that how much the Spanish art has contributed to the whole world.

Architecture

The Roman rule of Spain has highly effected and influenced Spanish architecture. The architecture of Spain starts from prehistoric monuments of Minorca to the Romans ruins in Merida. There is nothing which can be compared to the Lonja in Seville, Gothic cathedrals, Gaudi’s sculptures and beautiful castles of Spain.

The Guitar

Spain is also popular for its music. Its biggest contribution to world music was the guitar. The guitar, which is the most commonly used instrument in Spanish music, was invented in Andalucia when a 6th string was supplemented to the famous Moorish lute in the 1790’s. It got its modern structure in the late 1870’s. Andres Segovia was the most important personality in the field of guitar, who brought up classical guitar as a different genre. He was born 1893 and died a peaceful death in 1997. The popular Flamenco of Spain could have become nothing if the guitar would not have been invented. However, for knowledge sake, Paco de Lucia is the world’s best Flamenco guitarist.

Music

Paco’s friend named El Camaron de la Isla was the best in contemporary cante hondo, until he died in the year 1992. In the mid 1980’s flamenco was fused with rock and gypsy rock was invented, Ketama and Pata Negra are the big names of gypsy rock. In the early 1990’s Radio Tarifa came up with a enchanting mix of medieval sounds and the traditional flamenco. And who can forget Bakalao, who introduced Spain to techno music.
