There’s no doubt that the airport improvements over the years have help the tourism industry on Mallorca hugely. The island’s Aeropuerto de Son Sant Joan on the outskirts of Palma is model of modern design and efficiency.

The majority of foreign tourists who holiday on Mallorca are either German or British and, with over 7 million tourists flying to the island during 2009, the importance of a great airport cannot be underestimated.

For British travelers there are several airlines that offer cheap flights to Mallorca, with some operating a year round service while others just concentrate on the busier summer months. One of the benefits for airlines of operating a schedule to Mallorca is that the season is slightly longer than for other Mediterranean destinations. Also the flight duration and fast turnaround times that Palma airport is able to offer mean better efficiency and ultimately better profits.

Just how much Mallorca depends on its airport is shown by comparing the number of tourists arriving by air against the number arriving by sea. In 2009 that ratio was a staggering 50 to 1. Also the importance of the British and German markets to the tourism trade on Mallorca is highlighted by comparing the number of foreign tourists to the number of Spanish nationals arriving on the island by air. In 2009 that ratio was almost 5 to 1, which means that if you fly to Mallorca from the UK during 2010, you can regard yourself as a pretty important person.

British Airways online and direct sales manager, Keith Chuter, and Francisco De La Torre, the Mayor of Malaga Town Hall, put pen to paper this month, signing a letter of intent, making official their plans to further promote Malaga City in the British market. The letter lays the foundations of a two year agreement that will see British Airways use its online channels, to highlight the many flights available to Malaga from the UK, and further increase tourism to the city.

The agreement, set to begin in early 2010, will incorporate a two phase marketing, media and advertising campaign. Phase one will see British Airways expand its online channels, allowing it to strongly promote and sell Malaga. Two familiarisation trips will take place to highlight the city’s Picasso links, cultural and historic offerings, year-round events, fantastic gastronomy and prestigious hotels.

Phase two will involve the expansion of communication channels and development of advertising campaigns. The campaign will also see British Airways contract tours to the city, which will appear on the Malaga Turismo website, with a hyperlink to the British Airways website.

The agreement is scheduled to end in the Spring/Summer of 2011 however, if the campaign has been a great success it’s likely a further two year agreement will be signed.

British Airways currently operates 12 flights to Malaga from the UK every week and also offers a wide range of hotels, from the 3* value-for-money Atarazanas Malaga Boutique Hotel to the magnificent 4*+ Petit Palace Plaza ideally located in the historic centre.

It’s hoped this winning partnership with the Malaga Council of Tourism, will not only encourage more travellers to use the route but, will also encourage those visiting to explore the city and discover more about its rich heritage.

Flying into Spain from the UK is easy these days, with many regular daily flights from Heathrow and Gatwick and several other regional UK airports.

The two biggest Spanish airports are at Madrid and Barcelona. Spain’s national airline is Iberia. British Airways, American Airlines, Air France, Delta, Easyjet, and Ryanair are just a few of the airlines that fly regularly to Madrid’s Barajas International Airport. Smaller airlines and charter flights also fly to some of Spain’s smaller airports, such as those in Valencia, Granada, Malaga, and Seville. You can also get cheap flights to Palma making short trips to Majorca even more possible. For example, nearly 1.5 million passengers flew into Granada’s Federico Garcia Lorca Airport in 2008 on flights serviced by Spanair, Air Nostrum, Air Europa, Ryanair, Iberia, and Vueling Airlines.

To find the best air deals, check online at ticketing services like Expedia and Travelocity. Travel agents can also advise you on good fares. Check the local newspapers for adverts in the travel section. Be sure to look into the smaller airlines as they often offer the greatest discounts. Very often they fly to the smaller, regional airports, which is great for someone who is heading outside of the main cities. If you will be departing on a Mediterranean cruise from Spain, speak to your cruise company as they often have fly and cruise deals that combine a flight with the cruise at a good discount.

Spain is a tourist haven, with much to see and do. With flights so convenient and affordable, it is no wonder that Spain is such a popular holiday destination.
