Since the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona has catapulted itself into the higher ranks of tourist destinations and has solidified its status as a prime European cruise destination.

Barcelona is located on the northeast coast of the Iberian Peninsula and is the capital of the Catalonia region of Spain. It boasts of splendid architecture that will surely be a feast for the eyes of cruise passengers. The streets of Barcelona are filled with the signature works of famous architects who include Antoni Gaudi, Josep Puig I Cadafalch and Lluis Domènech i Montaner.

Not only does this place exude with the charms of Gothic architecture, it also boasts a fabulous array of signature Spanish cuisine that can give you an unforgettable dining experience. From street fare to fine dining, there is something to match your budget while tantalizing your taste buds. A must try is the Spanish tapas, snacks that are served at any local bar.

Barcelona has a wonderful climate that is conducive for roaming to look for novelty items and trinkets readily available in the shops to be found on the winding streets almost bursting with a charged atmosphere.

Indeed, this is a place that offers a variety of things to do, and what makes it more attractive is its accessibility not only from the port but also from the air.

If you’re planning to spend your holiday in Spain, and you’re from outside the EU, please keep in mind that you will probably need a tourist visa.

Around the world, both amateur and professional athletes are preparing for the annual Barcelona Half Marathon on February 8th 2009 at 09:00 local time, which gets the Spanish city warmed up before the yearly Full Marathon takes place in early March.

The organisers of the event – which is also known as the Asics Mitja Marato de Barcelona – explain that the 2008 event was massively popular, attracting a record number of participants.

Some 3,660 people took part in it – over a thousand more than in 2007. As such, the maximum number of athletes able to take part in the competition in 2009 has been increased to 4,500.

“The Half Marathon, at a distance of 21.097 kilometres, is for many athletes the ideal setting for a training session,” Pere Alcober i Solanas, one of the organisers, notes.

People staying in hotels in Barcelona next spring have plenty of time to register if they fancy lacing up their running shoes and taking part in the event as registration is open until February 3rd at 20:00 local time.

Anyone with enough speed and stamina to finish in the top three stands to win prizes ranging from 400 to 1,000 Euros and a trophy, while all participants will take home a souvenir T-shirt.
