There’s no doubt that the airport improvements over the years have help the tourism industry on Mallorca hugely. The island’s Aeropuerto de Son Sant Joan on the outskirts of Palma is model of modern design and efficiency.

The majority of foreign tourists who holiday on Mallorca are either German or British and, with over 7 million tourists flying to the island during 2009, the importance of a great airport cannot be underestimated.

For British travelers there are several airlines that offer cheap flights to Mallorca, with some operating a year round service while others just concentrate on the busier summer months. One of the benefits for airlines of operating a schedule to Mallorca is that the season is slightly longer than for other Mediterranean destinations. Also the flight duration and fast turnaround times that Palma airport is able to offer mean better efficiency and ultimately better profits.

Just how much Mallorca depends on its airport is shown by comparing the number of tourists arriving by air against the number arriving by sea. In 2009 that ratio was a staggering 50 to 1. Also the importance of the British and German markets to the tourism trade on Mallorca is highlighted by comparing the number of foreign tourists to the number of Spanish nationals arriving on the island by air. In 2009 that ratio was almost 5 to 1, which means that if you fly to Mallorca from the UK during 2010, you can regard yourself as a pretty important person.

Having a holiday is a fun thing, it’s great to work out where you want to go, and what you want to do while you’re there isn’t it. The one thing that for some of us can be a bit daunting is trying to keep it all within budget. First there’s flights to think of, then the hotel costs, not to mention meals, excursions out to places of interest, snacks, drinks, evening entertainment events for the kids and so on. It can all add up quickly and can be quite a pain trying to keep track of what you’re spending when all you really want to do is relax and enjoy the holiday.

One of the best options if you’ve ever felt like this, is an all inclusive holiday package. This way you know exactly what you’re paying and that everything is sorted before you go. You also know exactly what you’re getting for your money of course. In Alcudia there is a fantastic resort which provides just this sort of holiday to people. The facilities are wonderful and varied enough to cater for most tastes, and you can include flight, hotel, meals and use of some or all of the facilities that are available there.

The Hotel Bellevue is situated beside the Esperanza lake and consists of 17 separate buildings. It has almost the feel of a village with it’s self contained complex that offers amenities and activities within it’s own extensive grounds. The Beach is a mere 900m away, and Facilities include seven swimming pools, sun terraces, poolside bars, buffet restaurant, pizzeria, café, snack bar, pub, supermarket, tennis, squash and basketball courts, a five-aside football pitch, crazy golf, ten pin bowling, go-karts, funfair, and various day and evening entertainments. When you opt for the all Inclusive options, your meals, any snacks that you want, and drinks are all included within the price. If you are there when the are open you will also have use of the two kids world clubs that operate from May to October.

Obviously any excursions outside the complex will still need to be paid for separately but within the complex there is so much available that it’s perfectly possible to enjoy a holiday here without ever leaving the complex although to not visit the wonderful beaches nearby with their wonderful golden sands and blue sea, would be a shame.

The beautiful Balearic Island of Mallorca has long been a hot favourite with holidaymakers from around the world. Boasting breathtaking pine clad mountains, fantastic beaches and historic towns and cities. Along with a whole raft of fascinating visitor attractions.

Mallorca is the largest of the three Balearic Islands and is home to a number of resorts. Each with its own unique character. Whilst there are plenty of accommodation options available such as luxury hotels a growing number of visitors to the island now opt to book holiday villas in Mallorca direct online. Thanks to the growth of the internet and the availability of some fantastic character properties, especially in locations such as Pollensa in the north of the island.

Pollensa
Pollensa – or Pollenca – is a former Roman settlement dating back to the 5th century. And has become one of the most upmarket holiday locations on the island. Providing plenty of high quality accommodation in old traditional stone built farmhouses and fincas. All of which is located just some 8km from the coast.

The town is home to numerous pretty squares, streets and shops and is ideal for anyone seeking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the main resorts. Whilst also remaining in close proximity to the excellent beaches of the North coast. There is a fantastic range of luxury hotels in Spain close to the white sandy beaches in the North Coast of Spain. With the Easter holidays coming up, there is likely to be a few last minute deals available.

Puerto Pollensa
Puerto Pollensa is the close coastal cousin to Pollensa and is widely regarded as one of the most picturesque and photogenic locations on the island. Thanks to the breathtaking backdrop provided by the magnificent Tramantura Mountains.

The resort revolves around the main beach – which is around 3km long – and the luxury marina. And also has a delightful seafront promenade where tourists will find a good selection of bars and restaurants.

Can Picafort
Can Picafort is located close to Puerto Pollensa and is one of the most popular holiday destinations on the island. Boasting a huge sandy beach and a wide selection of bars, shops and restaurants.

The resort has evolved over the years from its original roots as a small fishing village and provides an excellent base for anyone seeking a holiday in the north of the island. Providing loads for visitors to do and see.

Cala D’or
This attractive resort is located on Mallorca’s east coast and is home to a number of holiday hot spots such as Porto Colom and the breathtaking beach at Cala Murada.

Mallorca is just a couple of hour’s flight from all major UK airports and whilst being a popular holiday destination still offers plenty of unspoiled scenery for visitors to enjoy.

Majorca is a fantastic holiday destination. With an abundance of sunshine and the pleasant waters of the Mediterranean, Majorca offers fantastic beaches and world famous resorts. It has become a major tourist destination for Europeans in search of a well deserved escape, family vacation or a romantic getaway. Majorca offers fantastic cuisine, great nightlife, a wide range of activities and a relaxed and laid back atmosphere.

Just off the Spanish coast, about 100 miles from Barcelona, the island offers a fantastic range of interest points and activities. The waters are ideal for water sports and vacationers enjoy some of the best snorkeling, diving, water- skiing and scuba diving For a more relaxed vacation, the white sandy beaches and fantastic sunshine offer some great escapes. Majorca has some of the most beautiful beaches in the area, and is often mentioned with the same breath as the Caribbean and the Seychelles as having some of the most beautiful beaches in the world making Majorca holidays an excellent holiday destination.

The laid back atmosphere provides for some fantastic fun. Clubs and bars offer amazing nightlife and one might even find the odd nude beach hiding here and there, where people are always happy to take on beach activities like volleyball in the buff. The beaches are surrounded by beautiful sand dunes and if you can find a secluded spot you might truly feel as if you are miles away from civilization.

Many of the hotels and resorts have several restaurants to accommodate guests and visitors. In addition, venture to the local restaurants and a taste of the Catalan cuisine and Franco- Spanish influences is highly recommended. A trip to Valdemossa, a hillside village in the South West corner of the island, will offer an entire day of interest points and an evening of authentic dining, fantastic shopping and great fun for all.

Flights to Majorca are cheap and can be found from most major UK cities from around 100 pounds and up, depending on the season. Flights arrive at Palma de Majorca, the capital city of the island, where most hotels and resorts are located. Deals and packages are offered by many companies and resorts, and usually include accommodation, flights and car rentals. These can significantly reduce the costs of your vacation and rid you of some serious planning headaches.

The island of Majorca has become a major tourist attraction and in the hot summer months is buzzing with activity, life, parties and thrills. It may not be the ideal place for those who are looking for a secluded and quiet holiday but certainly a great place for family holidays. If you are looking for a fun, exciting, break that will leave lasting memories of gorgeous settings, fantastic sunshine and an unforgettable time, Majorca is the place for you.

There are many parts of the world where you could have an enjoyable holiday however Majorca is simply unforgettable and once you have made your first visit, the probablity is that the island will entice you back again and again. One visit is really not enough, as there is so much to see and do, combined with breathtaking views and happy experiences around every corner.

A holiday on the island offers so many plus factors including -

* The warm sunny weather which is on offer during most of the year.
* Wonderful beaches.
* Beautiful towns, scenic views and welcoming local residents.

Another key area in having made Majorca such a popular holiday destination for so many years, is that in addition to the points mentiond above, it can be reached within a few flying hours from many parts of Europe.

You can therefore be sunbathing on one of the fabulous beaches or simply relaxing somewhere, only a relatively short time after leaving home. There is an abundance of excellent restaurants in all parts of the island and in these, they serve food typical and appropriate to many European countries. Many restaurants serve a fixed price “Meal of the Day” which is very popular and enables the client to know exactly how much the meal is going to cost.

With regard to accommodation, the choice is vast, from expensive grand Hotels to others which are comfortable and inexpensive. An alternative to staying in a Hotel is to rent an Apartment, where food can be bought in the shops and cooked whenever you wish, in the apartment. This can be a very relaxing type of holiday and great for familes.

Package Holidays have become very popular over the years and the attraction of these is that an all inclusive payment is made for the flights, accommodation, transfers and possibly entertainment. Once the choice has been made, the travel firm then has the stress of making the arrangements.

As all parts of Majorca are popular for holidays, there really is not a best area and individuals have their own preferences as to where they most like to stay and then they usually go back again in future years. One resort that is very popular with families and older couples is Puerto Pollensa. This resort is in the north of the island and is around an hours drive from Palma. A holiday in Puerto Pollensa is a rather laid back affair. This peaceful area of Majorca is popular because of the many restaurants and hotels that run along the beach as well as the tranquil Pine Walk area which is excellent for a stoll in the evening. Puerto Pollensa really is a place to go and relax, there are many stunning walks to go on, the marina is a great place to sit and have an evening drink and Formentor and the buiser resort of Alcudia are only a bus ride away.

If you are interested in visiting Majorca and Puerto Pollensa then it is worth checking out one of the big tour operators which do offer some great package deals on holidays to the island.

Majorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands, is a year round holiday destination nestling in the Mediterranean Sea. Its sundrenched sandy beaches, and hot summers make it the ideal destination for sun seekers. Majorca also has a mild spring and winter climate. During these seasons it attracts visitors during its festivals, and its scenic mountain landscapes prove popular with cyclists, birdwatchers, and sightseers.

Majorca is also something of an ‘in’ destination for celebrities, with Andrew Lloyd Webber, Catherine Zeta Jones, and Claudia Schiffer buying holiday homes there. All in all it’s an island that attracts everyone from celebrities and families, to couples and young people looking for a good time. But what can holidays in Majorca actually offer?

The Main Resorts in Majorca

Although one thing most of the main resorts in Majorca have in common are good beaches and warm blue sea, that’s where the similarities end. The islands capital, Palma, is also known for its lively nightlife, boutiques, and sophisticated promenades; not forgetting the gothic architecture, such as the imposing waterfront cathedral. Nearby Palma Nova is known for its safe, family friendly holidays. Magaluf is perhaps the most well known in terms of nightlife and the famous clubbing experience. The resort is geared towards young British tourists, and as such also has many British pubs and cafes. Cala Bona is a former fishing village, with a picturesque harbour, where boats still land fresh catches of seafood for the nearby restaurants. Puerto Pollensa is a laid back resort also hinting at traditional Majorca, with its stone houses, and Spanish restaurants around a scenic bay. Holidays in Majorca can provide anything from traditional and laidback, to lively and modern.

Things To Do In Majorca

•	To experience more of Majorca than just the beach, why not visit during one of their festivals. There are fiestas held throughout the year, many associated with religion, as Majorca has a strong Catholic heritage.
•	For explorers, there are island ferries running from Majorca to its smaller cousin Menorca. There are also excursions available on the Mountain Express which passes through orange and lemon groves on it way up into the Mountains.
•	For visitors bored with hotel entertainment, there are also trips available to two well known shows: Pirates Adventure has been running for 22 years, providing a buccaneer style eating experience, and a lively stunt/acrobatic show. The Son Amor Experience is a glitzy cabaret show set in a 16th century manor house. The show features renowned flamenco dancers for a real taste of Spanish culture. Both shows run through the summer season from March/April until October.

Flights to Majorca

•	Flights to Majorca, landing at Palma airport, run regularly from most U.K airports, with flight times ranging from 2 ¼ to 2 ½ hours.
•	Flight prices can vary enormously depending on the time of year, how far in advance you book, and who you book with. Some searches for flights will bring up variations in price/taxes for different flight times on the same day. If you are looking to book cheap flights to Majorca then it might be worth spending some time researching your options. Online travel companies may offer better deals on cheap flights to Majorca, than say the airlines or high street agents.

Location and Population

Majorca, also known as Mallorca in Spanish and Catalan, is the largest island of Spain. As many other cities of Spain, it is also located in the Mediterranean Sea. It also covers a part of the Balearic Islands archipelago. The name Majorca is derived from the Latin word insula maior, which means “larger island”. Palma, which is the capital of Majorca, is also the capital of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands.

The Anthem of Majorca is La Balanguera.

History

Majorca has been humanly inhabited for a period unknown. Traces of habitation and burial chambers from the ancient Paleolithic period have been discovered. Under Quinita Caecillius Metellus, the island was occupied by the Romans in 123 BC. Majorca at that time flourished under the Romans, and at that time the towns of Palamaria and Pollentia were founded. The local economy of Majorca in that period was mostly driven Viniculture, Olive cultivation and Salt Mining. The soldiers of Majorca were highly honored for their skills with the sling, amongst the Roman legions.
In 426 BC, the island was sacked by the Vandals; subsequently the island of Majorca was conquered by the Byzantine Empire. Under them Christianity became the religion of the island but from 707 BC, the island of Majorca was frequently raided by the Muslims from North Africa. From then till 1229, Majorca was continuously under changing rulers, when in the never ending confusion and chaos, King James I of Aragon invaded the island with 15,000 men and 1,500 horses, and annexed the island to his crown after a short campaign of three months. After the death of the king the kingdom was divided between his sons.
However, in the early part of the 18th century, the War of the Spanish Succession replaced the dynastic union of the King of Aragon with a unified and powerful Spanish monarchy.

Language

The official language which is spoken in Majorca is Spanish and Catalan. The local dialect of Catalan, which is most popular, is Mallorqui. However, different dialects are used in different islands and villages. Mostly all young Majorcans are bilingual in Spanish and Catalan, with brief knowledge of German or English. The reason for these foreign languages is the large number of tourists who come to Majorca.

Cuisine

Majorca also boasts of a long chain of eating joints and restaurants. According to the statistics of 2004 of the Majorcan Tourist Board, there were around 2,400 restaurants in Majorca. All these places ranged from small bars to big time restaurants. The regular inflow of tourists in the island of Majorca supports all these restaurants and bars. Even though Majorca is located on the Mediterranean, seafood is often imported. The common Majorcan diet consists of almonds and olives; this is not at all strange as the island has over 4 million trees of olives and almonds. The most famous cuisine of Majorca is the Sobrassada and Ensaimada.

The island of Majorca also has a football team known as Mallorca, which plays in the Spanish Football league.
