An art exhibition exploring almost 20 years of work by the Seville painter Bartolome Esteban Murillo is set open in his home city, with paintings borrowed from museums across the world included in the showcase. The Young Murillo looks at the artist’s output during his younger years, covering the time periods of 1638-40 and 1650-53, with 40 pieces and accompanying technical information included for visitors to gain a real knowledge of the painter.

According to the Museum of Fine Arts in Seville where the exhibition is taking place, Murillo established himself in the art sphere later on in life, but it was in the 1630s when he first made an impression in his home town.

The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 09:00 to 20:30 local time and 09:00 to 14:30 on Sundays and public holidays until May 30th. If you can bring proof of being a European Union citizen or a student can get free entry, while everyone else must pay €1.50 (£1.30).

Anyone who wants to make Christmas last a little bit longer may be interested in an unusual, seasonal event held every year in Spain’s Aragon region.

Saragossa plays host to the Three Kings parade on January 5th, with events running into the following day.

A colourful carnival accompanies the Three Kings, or Wise Men, as they ride through the city distributing sweets and presents to the crowds.

People who have booked Saragossa hotels for early January will no doubt be drawn on to the streets as the parade passes by.

Local celebrities play the three principle characters, while elaborately decorated floats and people in costume make up this long procession.

It begins in the Puerta del Carmen area of the city and continues down the Calle Alfonso I.

Another highlight of the event is the creation of an enormous cake, which is displayed in the morning before being cut into small pieces and handed out at lunchtime in the Plaza del Pilar.

For people travelling with children, there are shows across the city aimed at a younger audience, on offer both before and after the parade.

Check out availability of accommodation in Spain using the banner below.

While much of the recent past has seen football dominating Spanish sports, the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Carlos Sastre’s Tour de France win, and Rafael Nadal’s triumph at Wimbledon have added to the sense that Spain is larger than football. Nevertheless, football wins, like the victory in the UEFA Euro 2008, are still much appreciated by the sports-watching public for whom football is still the most popular sport.

Cycling has gained popularity in the last number of years, in part due to the success of Spanish cyclists Miguel Indurain and Carlos Sastre, who won the Tour de France in 2008; Indurain won five times in the early 1990s. The ‘Vuelta a Espana’, the Tour of Spain, is one of the world’s most important cycling events, along with the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France.

Spain has produced world-class golfers and has a number of important courses throughout the country, including San Roque, Alcaidesa, and Sotogrande. Spaniard Sergio Garcia is considered one of the world’s top golfers.

Basketball is popular, with the Spanish ACB a major European league. Real Madrid and FC Barcelona have been victorious in European championships like the Eurocup.

Handball, volleyball, and rugby are all played throughout Spain and are growing in popularity.

Skiing has also seen an increase in popularity, especially in the Sierra Nevada in Granada. Spain has the southernmost ski resorts in Europe, and three million skiers, both holidaymakers and those living in Spain, visit the slopes annually.

Water sports are popular in the coastal areas. Bullfights and other traditional Spanish sports, such as Basque pelota and Valencian pilota, similar to jai alai, have their own place in Spanish sports.

Festival lovers enjoy Spain, as it seems there is always an interesting one to see, such as a festival celebrating the season, a saint, a particular region or a religious holiday.

In Brunol, in Valencia, ‘La Tomatina’ is not to be missed. Taking place in late August, this yearly tomato fight dates back to 1945 — and it has been celebrated ever since then on the last Wednesday of the month. What started out as a fight between children has grown into an area wide event that is simply a giant tomato fight. It starts at 9am, but the real fun begins at 11am and incorporates truckloads of tomatoes.

The Veranos de la Villa Festival takes place every year in Madrid from late June to late August, with a programme of varied performing arts for all ages. The festival is held throughout the city, with concerts, dance performances, opera, cinema, and theatre.

Semana Santa de Granada, Easter week, is celebrated with gusto, with parades, processions, music, and art, against the backdrop of the Alhambra. Holy Week is an important week in many towns and villages; in Malaga, during the week of festivities, a prisoner is released in a traditional and solemn ceremony.

Later in the year, in August, Malaga is the site of the ‘Feria de Malaga’, the Malaga Fair. It’s a 10-day celebration with fireworks, parades, and flowing wine.

Pamplona is the site of the ‘Fiesta de San Fermin’, the running of the bulls. It is held in July, and is the most popular and well-known fiesta in Spain.
